Clarity from the Beginning

One of the most useful things we can give you is a clear picture of the process. Invisalign is not just trays. It is a coordinated sequence of diagnostics, planning, manufacturing, active treatment, and retention.

The Process

Six Phases, One Coordinated Plan

Each phase has a clinical purpose. Understanding how they fit together makes the entire treatment experience feel more intentional and less uncertain.

01

Getting Started

45-60 minutes

Your New Patient Consultation

Your journey starts with a full orthodontic evaluation. We review your smile goals, examine your teeth and bite, and gather the records needed to determine whether Invisalign is the right fit for your case.

What Happens In This Phase

  • Clinical photos, digital scans, and diagnostic X-rays give us the baseline for your treatment.
  • We walk through your goals, expected timeline, and what Invisalign can realistically accomplish.
  • If you are ready to move forward, we review financial options and reserve a start date.
02

Clinical Prep

A few days to 1-2 weeks

Dental Clearance from Your Dentist

Before treatment planning begins, we need confirmation that your teeth and gums are healthy and stable. This protects the accuracy of your scan and prevents avoidable delays later.

Why Clearance Matters

Your scan only works if your teeth are not changing.

If you still need a filling, crown, or other restorative work, the shape of the tooth can change and invalidate the scan used to create your aligners. Getting clearance first avoids a rescan and protects your timeline.

Scheduling Rule

We need clearance at least 3 weeks before your start date.

What Happens In This Phase

  • We send your dentist the clearance form or provide it for you to forward.
  • If there is pending dental work, we will tell you exactly what needs to be completed before we proceed.
  • Our team follows up on outstanding clearance so you are not left guessing about timing.

Treatment Design

About 1 week

ClinCheck Digital Planning

Once clearance is in, Dr. Osborn builds your digital treatment plan with Invisalign. Every tooth movement is reviewed and refined before anything is approved for manufacturing.

What Happens In This Phase

  • Your prescription is sent to Invisalign's design team to generate a full tooth-by-tooth simulation.
  • Dr. Osborn reviews the setup carefully and typically requests refinements before approval.
  • Only after the movements are clinically correct is the case approved for fabrication.

Fabrication

About 10 business days

Aligner Manufacturing and Delivery

After approval, Invisalign manufactures your custom aligner series and ships it to our office. Each tray is produced from your exact scan and approved treatment plan.

What Happens In This Phase

  • Your aligners are made specifically for your teeth and your planned sequence of movements.
  • The full series is shipped directly to Seaport Smiles.
  • We contact you as soon as everything arrives and your start visit is ready to go.
05

Active Treatment

6-18 months total treatment

Your Invisalign Start Appointment

This is when treatment officially begins. We deliver your first aligners, place attachments if needed, and make sure you leave with a clear plan for wear, care, and follow-up.

What Happens In This Phase

  • Small tooth-colored attachments may be placed to help certain movements track more precisely.
  • You will receive instructions on wear time, tray changes, and remote monitoring when applicable.
  • Most patients come in every 6-8 weeks for quick progress checks.
06

Long-Term Stability

Retention is lifelong

Retention and Protecting Your Results

Finishing Invisalign is a milestone, not the end. Retainers keep your teeth from drifting and protect the result you worked for.

What Happens In This Phase

  • Custom retainers are made from your final result for a precise fit.
  • You will follow a wear schedule that usually starts full-time and transitions to nights.
  • Replacement retainers matter because long-term stability depends on consistent retainer wear.

Common Questions

What Patients Ask Most Often

What happens if my dental clearance takes longer than expected?+

If we do not receive clearance at least three weeks before your reserved start date, we may need to move that appointment. We monitor this closely and reach out before timing becomes a surprise.

Why do you need dental clearance before treatment planning?+

Pending fillings, crowns, or other dental work can change the shape of a tooth. If that happens after your scan, the aligners may no longer fit the plan accurately and the case may need to be rescanned and rebuilt.

Can I choose my start date?+

Yes. We reserve a date that works for you, but it stays contingent on the clinical steps being complete: clearance received, planning approved, and aligners delivered to the office.

Will I be able to see my treatment plan before I start?+

Yes. Your ClinCheck is a digital simulation of how your teeth are expected to move over time, and we can review that projected outcome with you before treatment begins.

How often will I come in during active treatment?+

Most Invisalign patients return every six to eight weeks for progress checks, with remote monitoring used in some cases between visits.
